When Janet Threshman signed up for the CDL course Internet Marketing, she ordered her books, began reading, and figured she’d learn a little more about this topic as part of her degree program in Business Management and Economics.
In this course, students are required to write an effective e-marketing plan; develop a brand voice and mission statement; and conceptualize internet marketing communication materials for a real-world business. Modules are written progressively to build upon existing concepts and upon completion of the 15 weeks, finalize into actual promotional materials.
Threshman’s timing couldn’t have been more perfect! She is co-owner of Nature’s Reserve Alpacas, located within the Delaware River Valley in Callicoon, NY. With an upcoming Mid-Atlantic tradeshow on the horizon, and the thought of potential tourist visitors in spring, her work in the course became a win-win for her business.
At the show, Threshman literally put her plan into action.
“With all of my new marketing materials, including new brochures, rack cards, and business cards all with tag apps, I was ready for the show. I was so excited to see how everything was accepted. Our farm was the only one out of farms from 29 states to have such a well-designed program. I felt really good about being on the cutting edge of marketing,” Threshman said.
Course Instructor Robert Fruchter shared her enthusiasm and accomplishments.
“Janet did a great job on these materials. She really put a lot of time and effort into developing a strategic program and communication materials to support it. When students directly apply the knowledge gained in courses to their jobs or real-world businesses, it increases the value of the learning and the experience for everyone. Motivation levels are higher, understanding of concepts increases, and at the end of the course, students have a real portfolio they can use to present to clients, team members, committee members or other stakeholders. Like Janet and her partner, everyone finishes happy,” said Fruchter.
