Social Sciences at Center for Distance Learning
The photos at the top of this commons page are photos that I took in Flam Norway, Bergen Norway, Mostar Hercegovina, and Budapest Hungary. I love to travel and have had the great fortune to be able to visit a number of places. G.K. Chesterton said “The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.” I completely agree with this statement. Whenever I travel…by rail and boat through my ancesters’ homeland or public bus through Hercegovina/Bosnia….I learn so much about myself and the world. In today’s global society, it is essential that individuals challenge their comfort, perspectives, and opinions by the act of traveling. The bridges that we build as we voyage through the world provide important networks and understandings that are vital to the well-being of the human race.
Space is one dimension in which we may travel. Voyages can also occur through time as we explore events that have happened in the past and consider possible events in the future. We can voyage with books, music, art, and mathematics. These all provide great opportunities to expand our understanding of ourselves and the world.
I encourage each of you to consider your academic experience at Empire State College as both a voyage and bridge. You will travel to new understandings as you carry your experiences and knowledge. Bon voyage!
