Academic Support Offers Drop-in Hours

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

Students who are looking for help with their Angel courses and creating a study plan are in luck!  The Office of Academic Support will be holding drop-in hours at the Latham and Saratoga locations as well as through an online classroom.  “The benefit of drop-in hours is that students can stop in anytime during the drop-in hours and get help with their specific needs” stated Kate Stockton, one of the learning coaches at the Northeast Center.  “This is great for all kinds of students, those who just want a quick question answered to those who need someone to sit down and walk them through logging in to their Angel course or developing a personalized study plan.”

There are two different drop-in hours being offered this term.  The first one will be on “Enhancing How You Learn in the Angel Environment” and it will run from 4-6pm on Wednesday January 16th and 9:30am – 12:30pm on Friday January 18th.  First term students, students taking an online course for the first time and any other students who have questions about using the Angel platform are encouraged to come.  Learning coaches, peer coaches and technical support will be available to help students during these drop-in times.

The other drop-in topic will be “Plan for Success – Developing Your Study Plan”.  Drop-in hours will be from 4-7pm on Wednesday January 23rd and 9:30am – 12:30 pm on Friday January 25th.  First-term students, reinstated students and students who just want to be proactive in planning their term successfully are encouraged to attend at their convenience.

In addition to helping students on these specific topics, students will also get a chance to learn more about academic support resources and meet academic support team member such as learning coaches, peer coaches and the Director of Academic Support.  For more information please email necacademicsupport@esc.edu, call 783-6203 ext. 5946 or go to www.necacademicsupport.pbworks.com.

Welcome November Term New Students!

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

The Northeast Center Offices of Academic Support and Student Services would like to welcome all new students who are starting this November!  After you register for classes there are some things you can do to get ready for your first term as an ESC student.

1. Order your textbooks – you can go to our bookstore or check out alternative places such as amazon, textbooks.com, bookrenter.com or Mary Jane Books (in Albany).

2. Get organized – set up your study place, stock up on school supplies, coordinate your childcare situation, create binders for each course, review learning contracts and add your appointments, due dates, study group meetings to your planner.

3. Start to communicate – Send a short introduction email to your mentor and course instructors.  Make sure to get clarification on any questions you have whether they pertain to registration, course assignments, financial aid or anything else.  Check out page 152 in the student planner for information on “who to contact”.

4. Sign up for workshops – The Academic Skills workshops are listed in the student planner and also on the necacademicsupport.pbworks.com site.  The library @home workshops schedule and registration information is available at www.esc.edu/library.

Keep in mind that as an independent learner much of your learning needs to be completed between your appointments and/or study group meetings.  Make sure to plan each week and every day to make sure you have budgeted enough time for each course.  A good rule of thumb is to budget about 10-14 hours each week per 4 credit course.

For more assistance in setting up an individualized study plan, feel free to contact the Office of Academic Support – necacademicsupport@esc.edu.
